Apple is testing the iPhone with a USB-C port, the report said

Apple is testing iPhones that replace its Lightning port for a USB-C, Bloomberg Says in a new report.

However, the update will not be seen in this year’s lineup, Apple expert Mark Gurman said in the report, as the change will not happen until 2023. The report follows tweets from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo last week indicating that the Cupertino-based technology giant will switch to USB-C in the second half of 2023, possibly when the new iPhone lineup is unveiled.

The switch will be a big one for Apple. However, it does not come as a surprise. The company has already replaced the iPad Air, iPad Pro and iPad Mini with USB-C. A proposal by the European Union in September to include a USB-C port would require a number of devices, including smartphones.

In his report, Gurman said the law was “a key reason” for Apple to consider the change.

USB-C has the added technical advantage of being able to move faster than lightning. Apple first introduced the Lightning port in 2012 with the iPhone 5.

Rumors have also spread about Apple creating a portless iPhone, and Gurman says the tech giant has worked on iPhones without a charging port in recent years. However, his latest report does not mention that the portless iPhone will appear anytime soon.

Apple has found itself in the crosshairs of the block several times. The European Commission has accused the company of abusing dominance in the market for contactless smartphone payments. The commission said in a preliminary investigation that the company may have violated competition laws.
