Veteran politician Basavaraj Horatti, who recently resigned as chairman of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly and MLC, joined the BJP on Wednesday. He joined the party in the presence of Chief Minister Basavaraj Bomai, former Chief Minister Jagdish Shettar, BJP National General Secretary City Robi, Minister R Ashok, Govinda Karjol, CC Patil.

“Basavaraj Horatti has been a member of the Legislative Assembly for about 45 years and has served as its chairman and minister. He is a leader with a lot of experience, has a lot of respect and has been working for teachers. Met and resigned from his post and officially joined the team today, “Bomai said.

Speaking to reporters after welcoming the veteran leader, he said the BJP was organizing a huge function in Hubli on the occasion of joining his party soon.

“His joining has strengthened the team. No one in the country has a record of being MLC for so long. It has strengthened the team especially in the North Karnataka region. We will use his experience and give him everything. Opportunity and respect he deserves,” he added. .

With that, Horatti, who has been elected MLC seven times in a row since 1980, has ended his long association with the JD (S).

He may run in the upcoming MLC elections from the West Teachers Center as a BJP candidate.

Considered the oldest MLC, the 76-year-old was seen as a prominent Lingayat face of the JD (S) of North Karnataka.

He was the Minister of State for Education and was elected Chairman of the Legislative Assembly in February 2021.
