Climate action in developing countries depends on the supply of money and technology

Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav on Saturday said that the ambitious implementation of climate action by developing countries depends on adequate provision of climate finance, technology transfer and other assistance.

Attending the BRICS High-Level Meeting on Climate Change, the Minister jointly highlighted the relevance of the Forum on Climate Change, exploring ways to accelerate low-carbon and resilient transformation and achieving sustainable recovery and development.

The BRICS high-level meeting was chaired by Chinese Minister of Ecology and Environment Huang Runqiu and attended by BRICS countries’ environment ministers, including Brazil, Russia, India and South Africa.

Yadav emphasized India’s commitment to strong climate action, including promoting sustainable lifestyles based on careful use and waste reduction.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is leading by example, taking a number of powerful steps in the areas of renewable energy, sustainable habitat, carbon sequestration through additional forest and tree cover, transformation into sustainable transport, e-mobility, mobility. The private sector promises climate, he said.

Yadav noted how India has been steadily doubling its economic growth from greenhouse gas emissions.

He added that “ambitious implementation of climate action by developing countries is dependent on ambitious and adequate provision of climate finance, technology transfer and other implementation assistance, as mandated by the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) and the Paris Agreement.”

The Minister expressed optimism about the Glasgow decision and the climate finance delivery in line with the Climate Finance Delivery Plan published by the COP 26 Presidency.

The BRICS environment ministers pledged to strengthen cooperation on climate change and to broaden and deepen the scope of cooperation.

The two countries agreed to exchange policies and cooperate in the field of environment and climate change.
