Delhi Mundka fire: At least 16 killed, several injured

At least 16 people have been confirmed dead in a massive fire at a three-storey building near Delhi’s Mundka metro station on Friday, news agency ANI reported. About ten people were injured and taken to hospital. Rescue efforts are still underway.

Delhi Fire Service Deputy Chief Fire Officer Sunil Chowdhury added, “Some people jumped from the building, they have been shifted to the hospital.”

About 60-70 people were rescued from the building, police said, with some still trapped inside. According to fire department officials, the fire was reported at 4.40 pm, after which 24 fire tenders went to the scene.

A fire broke out in a building near Pillar No. 544 of Mundka Metro Station. Police arrived at the scene after receiving reports of the blaze, smashed windows in the building, rescued people and rushed the injured to a hospital, a senior police officer said.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the three-storey commercial building was typically used by companies to provide office space, Sharma said. The fire started from the first floor of the building where a CCTV camera and router manufacturer’s office is located, the DCP said.

The owner of the company is in police custody. The fire service at the scene is trying to bring the situation under control. An ambulance was also on the scene to provide immediate medical assistance to the injured, police said.
