Despite rising mercury levels in Delhi, demand for electricity has declined: Data

Despite record daytime temperatures in Delhi, power demand has declined in the last few days, mainly due to holidays, DISCOM officials said on Monday.
A painful heat wave swept across the city on Sunday, with mercury rising to 49.2 degrees Celsius in Mungeshpur in northwest Delhi and 49.1 degrees Celsius in Najafgarh, southwest of the city.

However, according to realtime data from the State Load Dispatch Center in Delhi, the maximum power demand reached 6,732 MW at 11.26 pm on Sunday, the top agency for ensuring integrated operation of power systems in the capital.

At midnight on Sunday and Monday, it dropped slightly to 6,688 MW, according to SLDC.
Delhi saw its highest power demand three days ago in May when it reached 6,829 MW at 11.25 pm on May 13.

“Demand is sluggish due to weekly holidays and Buddha Purnima holidays. In general, as the daytime temperature rises, the maximum demand increases with the increase in cooling load, ”said a DISCOM official.

With partly cloudy skies in Delhi, the minimum temperature on Monday was recorded at 30.8 degrees Celsius, four degrees higher than normal this season.
On July 2, 2019, Delhi’s all-time high demand was 7,409 MW In a harsh summer season this year, discs expect maximum demand to exceed 8,000 MW and reach 8,200 MW the next day.
