EPL: Manchester City fight to draw with West Ham, close the title door

Manchester City trailed 2-0 with a 2-2 draw with West Ham United on Sunday and are in charge of their thrilling Premier League title fight with Liverpool.

Juergen Klopp’s side played in Southampton on Tuesday and City had a chance to open a six-point lead at the top but a draw at the London Stadium left them four points ahead of Liverpool with one game left.

Regardless of Liverpool’s results against Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers, a win on the last day at Aston Villa will guarantee City their fourth league title in five seasons.

Pep Guardiola’s side will win the Liverpool Harley title in Southampton on Tuesday.

West Ham’s Jared Bowen hit twice in the first half but early in the second half Vladimir Kofal returned a one for Jack Grillish City before scoring a suicide goal. Riyadh missed the golden opportunity of Mahrez City to win the penalty late.

After losing to City defender Alexander Jinchenko Bowen’s track, West Ham forward Pablo Fernandez climbed to the top and scored in the 24th minute for goalkeeper Ederson for a clinical finish.

Bowen added another in the 45th minute when Michael Antonio sent him off with a clever pass and found the English forward’s low strike from the edge of the box in the bottom corner.

Returning to the City Bounce in the second half, playmaker Gryllis headed in a high ball box from Rodri after scoring a volley for the spectators in the 49th minute.

West Ham had a chance to add their third goal in the 65th minute when a loose back pass from Fernandinho sent Antonio the lead but the Jamaican forward sent his shot over the bar.

In the 69th minute, West Ham defender Kaufel Mahrez crossed the net with a header and regretted the loss of the hosts.

Mahrez could have become City’s hero in the 86th minute but his spot-kick was knocked out by keeper Lukasz Fabianski after Craig Dawson dropped Gabriel Jesus in the penalty box.

The result confirmed West Ham European football next season as they finished seventh with 56 points.

The game marked Mark Noble’s farewell game in front of home fans as the midfielder set to unveil his 18-year, one-club career at the end of the season.
