Former Australian cricketer Andrew Symonds has been killed in a car crash

Former Australian Test cricketer and two-time World Cup winner Andrew Symonds has died in a car crash in Queensland, Cricket Australia confirmed on Sunday.

Symonds is 46 years old. He has played 26 Tests for Australia.

The crash happened Saturday night at Harvey Range, about 50 miles (50 kilometers) from Townsville, police said. A police statement said the car that Symonds was driving had left the road and described it as a single car accident.

“Australian cricket has lost another of its best,” Cricket Australia chairman Lachlan Henderson said in a statement.

“Andrew was a generational genius who played a key role in Australia’s success at the World Cup and in Queensland’s rich cricket history.

“He was a cult figure to many who were valuable to his fans and friends.

“Our deepest condolences to Andrew’s family, teammates and friends on behalf of Australian cricket.”

Symonds was a member of Australia’s World Cup winning team in 2003 and 2007 and played 198 ODIs in addition to 26 Tests from 2004 to 2008.

Known for his middle-order batting performance, he was a skilled all-rounder who could bowl both off-spin and medium speed.

“Everyone identified him as a white ball player,” former teammate Mark Taylor told Channel Nine.

“He wanted to prove to the world that he could play Test cricket and he did.

“He was just an entertainer. He wanted to go out and have fun and play the game he remembered playing as a kid.

“Sometimes he got into trouble for not going to training or drinking too much beer … but that’s how he made his living and the way he wanted to play his cricket.”

Symonds’ death comes as Australian cricket still comes to terms with the deaths of all-time greats Rod Marsh and Shane Warne, both of whom died in March.

Queensland police say an investigation into the crash has begun.

A police statement said, “Preliminary information indicates that the vehicle was driving on Harvey Range Road near Alice River Bridge shortly after 11pm when it left the road and rolled over.”

“Emergency services tried to resuscitate the 46-year-old driver and the only passenger, but he died of his injuries.

“The forensic crash unit is investigating.”
