Prime Minister Modi inaugurates India’s first 5G testbed

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated the country’s first 5G testbed to enable startups and industry players to test and verify their products locally and reduce reliance on foreign facilities. The test bed has been installed at a cost of about Rs 220 crore.

Speaking on the occasion of the Silver Jubilee of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the Prime Minister said that 5G testbed is critical and an important step towards self-reliance towards modern technology. ” Modi said.

The 5G testbed has been developed as a multi-institute collaborative project by eight organizations led by IIT Madras. In the absence of a 5G testbed, startups and other industry players will have to go abroad to test and verify their products for installation on a 5G network.

Other organizations participating in the project are IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, IISc Bangalore, Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering and Research (SAMEER) and Center of Excellence in Wireless Technology (CEW). The testbed facility will be available in 5 different locations.
