Rajnath Singh launches INS Surat, INS Udayagiri in Mumbai

Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh today launched two Indian Navy frontline warships – INS Surat and INS Udayagiri – at the Mazagan Docks Limited (MDL) in Mumbai. The INS Surat is the fourth guided missile destroyer of the P15B class, and the INS Udayagiri is the second stealth frigate of the P17A class.

The warships were designed by the Directorate of Naval Design (DND) and built at MDL, Mumbai. In his speech, Rajnath Singh described the warships as a firm commitment to increase the country’s maritime capabilities by focusing on achieving the government’s “self-reliance” at a time when global supply chain is being disrupted due to COVID-19 and Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Singh said, “INS Udayagiri and INS Surat are shining examples of India’s growing indigenous potential. In the future, we will not only meet our own needs, but also the world’s shipbuilding needs. We will soon realize Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Make in India, Make for the World’. “

Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R Hari Kumar and other senior officials of the Indian Navy and the Ministry of Defense were present on the occasion.

The Defense Minister made special mention of the domestic aircraft carrier INS Bikrant, calling it a major milestone in the path of ‘self-reliance’ of the Indian Navy. He hoped the carrier would extend India’s reach from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean. The commissioning of INS Bikrant will be a golden moment in the history of Indian defense, he said.
