Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday congratulated the Indian badminton team for winning their first Thomas Cup title. He mentioned that the Indian badminton team has made history.
“The Indian badminton team has made history! The whole nation is overjoyed to have won the India Thomas Cup! Congratulations to our talented team and best wishes for their future endeavors. This victory will inspire many upcoming athletes,” Prime Minister Modi wrote on Twitter.
On Sunday, a determined Indian men’s team made history by winning the Thomas Cup for the first time, defeating 14-time champions Indonesia 3-0 in the final.
India’s World Championship medalists Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikkanth and Chirag Sethi and Sattviksairaj Rankireddy’s world number 8 doubles pair have put together a memorable performance for ages.
After being off-color in the knockout stage, Sen delivered when it was most important as he led India to a 1-0 victory over world number five Anthony Sinisuka Ginting 8-21 21-17 21-16. A fantastic display of temperament and skill.
Sattviksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, the country’s best doubles pair, then showed steel nerves as they saved four match points in the second game to finally beat Mohammad Ahsan and Kevin Sanjay Sukamuljo 18-21 23-21 21-19.
In the second singles event, Srikanth then sealed the competition by beating Asian Games gold medalist Jonathan Christie 21-15 23-21 in 48 minutes.
